A Remarkable young Man:

Looking for a primary school friend via Google, I came across this young man:

Meet Martin Pistorius.  No, that's not a fashion statement around his head.  I believe it's called a Head Mouse (Smart-NAV).  He uses it to communicate.  Go figure.

Whenever you wake up and start complaining about a sore toe or a back that hurts, think of the following:

"Martin Pistorius is a 30-year-old South African and a person with a significant disability. As a result of a brain infection at the age of twelve, he suffers from severe motor problems and completely unable to speak. These disabilities resulted in it being presumed that he had the mental age of that of a three-month-old baby. He spent the next 14 years of his life at a daycare centre and occasionally in an institution for the profoundly mentally and physically disabled. In July 2001 he was assessed at the University of Pretoria's Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. The subsequent purchase of a laptop computer with specialized communication software and countless hours of learning empowered him. He has learnt to communicate via computer, became literate, made friends, and found sponsorship for a Power-wheelchair. He has obtained employment at the University of Pretoria's Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) and the Meraka Institute at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He has obtained an Advanced Certificate in Education, with specialization in learners with severe disabilities from the University of Pretoria. This year he has registered with the University of South Africa (UNISA) and is doing a course in Internet and Web Design through correspondence."

The above text was zapped from the site of ortra.com.  (If I needed permission for that, please let me know!)  The photo above was also affirmatively shopped from there.  This text was dated 2005.

I contacted Martin via email, and he has been ever so kind, answering many a stupid question regarding care for the disabled.  We have a 15-year old daughter with CP, and it is a constant worry, knowing how to plan her future.  Martin has remarkable insight regarding the matter, and is of great help.

Look!  He's even met the prez!  This pic was zapped from Martin's cyberspot: www.martinp.co.za.  Do yourself a favour:  Go have a look!

World class Photography

If you want to see world class photos, have a look at www.rayscam.com .  Considering the fact that the man does not see himself as a professional photographer, his work is amazing.  South Africa lost a brilliant craftsman when this guy left for Australia.  I don't have his permission for this, but I am adding a pic of Ray.  He did, however, give me permission to use his work, but I'm afraid my limited software wouldn't allow that.  Pity.  So pleeeeeze go there  -  you will be amazed!

I managed to add these images, but I am not quite satisfied with the result.  Evidently my software has gone ever so slightly haywire.  The first image, especially, seems distorted.  Also:  The photo titles went missing!  I shall attempt to recover the titles & fix the photos in due course.

Free SMS & MMS!

Please note that this is NOT a Vodacom South Africa  Advertisement.  I have been a Vodacom customer since 1998.  I have no idea how long this Thang I want to tell you about, has been in existence, but I only heard about it in July 2007.  Since I have great fun with it, I felt I should share it with you.  Vodacom isn't advertising it, so I thought I would do them a favour.

DID YOU KNOW?

If you are a Vodacom SA cellphone or Vodafone Mobile Connect customer, you are entitled to 20 (TWENTY!) free SMS per day, as well as 5 (FIVE!) free MMS per day.  All you need, is internet access.  And being here, and being able to read this, you have that!  Let me tell you how:

  • Go to www.vodacom4me.co.za
  • Enter your cell number in the box.  (NB:  Have your cellphone at hand!)
  • Click on Register
  • Complete the questions
  • At this point Vodacom will SMS a password to your cellphone.
  • Log in using the password.
  • DO NOT LOSE THE PASSWORD!
  • The next step takes a while.  Be patient and wait for "Done" in your status bar
  • Go to "Messaging" and follow the instructions from there.
  • Dig around a bit:  You will find some delightful stuff  -  Look under "Fun Content"  -  Nice jokes etc that you can forward by FREE SMS to your buddies!
  • The only disadvantage:  Free SMS & MMS can only be sent to other Vodacom users.
  • This is also where you get FREE e-mail with lekker storage space.
  • Have fun!

NB:  The Mo the Meercat image is used here entirely without the permission of Vodacom.  But how can they mind?  I am promoting their services FOR FREE!
